Your Guide to Visiting Warm Mineral Springs in North Port, Florida

Warm Mineral Springs, located in North Port, Florida, is a unique and unexpected destination for relaxation. While many people associate Florida with unbearable summer heat, our winters offer an ideal climate, rarely dropping below 40°F. As locals and visitors seek enjoyable winter activities in Florida, the Warm Mineral Springs should be added to your must-visit list. This geothermal spring has attracted visitors for centuries, thanks to its consistently 85°F warm waters and rich mineral content.

The History of Warm Mineral Springs

The history of Warm Mineral Springs stretches back thousands of years. Evidence suggests that Paleo-Indians considered this spring a sacred site, with artifacts discovered within its depths dating back 10,000 years. The healing properties of the spring’s water have been recognized since ancient times. Its water contains high levels of sulfur and magnesium, believed to help soothe aching joints. Due to these beneficial qualities, the spring attracts 150,000 annual visitors seeking relaxation and relief from various ailments.

Over the centuries, the springs have witnessed many evolutions. In the early 1900s, it became a popular tourist destination, boasting a resort with a hotel, bathhouse, and even a dance hall. This era saw the springs flourish as a social and recreational hub.

The springs have encountered challenges in recent years due to changes in ownership and a decline in popularity, resulting in periods of neglect. The buildings on the property reflect the Art Deco style that characterized what was once a vibrant entertainment hotspot. Today, these structures are barricaded and appear to be condemned. Fortunately, recent efforts to revitalize the site have gained momentum, aiming to preserve its historical significance and provide a rejuvenating experience for visitors.

As I explored the property, I recognized the great potential for revitalizing the area. Its current condition leaves much to be desired. However, if you approach it with the same mindset and supplies you would take for a day at the beach, you can definitely enjoy a fun day in the spring.

Making the Most of Your Visit: What to Bring and What to Expect

Just like a day at the beach, you have to come prepared. To enhance your experience at Warm Mineral Springs, consider packing the following essentials:

  • Swimwear: This should be obvious. The warm, mineral-rich waters are the star attraction, so don’t forget your swimsuit!
  • Towels: Be sure to bring plenty of towels to dry off after your refreshing dip in the spring. The water temperature is a consistent 85°F year-round. If you visit on a cool winter day in Florida, you may feel chilly as soon as you get out of the water. It’s a good idea to bring more towels than you think you’ll need, and perhaps a small blanket, to help warm up afterward.
  • Sunscreen and Hat: Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can skip the sun protection. Protect yourself from the Florida sun with sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • A Flotation Device/ Pool Noodle: The pool noodle is definitely the way to go. The depth around the perimeter of the spring ranges from four to five feet, where most people casually float, enjoying the experience like a lazy river. In the center, a circular buoy marks a steep drop-off, going from five feet to 225 feet. Many swimmers chose to swim laps in this deeper area.
  • Water Bottle: Stay hydrated. There aren’t any concessions or places to get water. Bring plenty of water.
  • Snacks: Once again, there are no concessions available. Just like a day at the beach, bring snacks and drinks to enjoy during your visit. They have a patio area where you can sit comfortably and eat. Remember, you will need to pack out whatever you bring in.
  • Water Shoes: Some people might consider water shoes optional, but for me, they are essential. The bottom of the springs is filled with large, slimy rocks. If you’re not stubbing your toes, you’re likely slipping on the sulfur-coated slime. I wore my Chacos, as I do everywhere, and they were perfect for the occasion.
  • Snorkel and Mask (optional): If you’re interested in exploring the underwater world at the spring, consider bringing snorkeling gear. However, the water wasn’t very clear, and I wasn’t comfortable putting my hair in it for fear it would smell like sulfur. But if you’re bringing kids, definitely pack the snorkel. They might discover a cool fossil among the rocks!
  • Chair (optional): There are many chairs available—hundreds in fact. On a busy day, these chairs can be filled to capacity. I wasn’t sure what to expect on the day I visited, so I decided to bring my own chair. I’m glad I did because mine is adjustable and includes features like cup holders, a magazine holder, and a bottle opener. Most of the chairs at Warm Mineral Springs are plastic lawn chairs designed for sitting, but not for relaxing.

Things to Do at Warm Mineral Springs

  • Soak in the spring: The main draw, of course, is the warm, mineral-rich water. You can float around the shallow perimeter or swim laps in the deeper middle part of the mineral spring. I floated around with my noodle, thinking of the experience as a natural spa. I soaked up the healing minerals and got some exercise as I swam around the water.
  • Enjoy a picnic: Find a shaded spot and enjoy a picnic lunch amidst the natural beauty. After swimming for an hour, you will be hungry. Break open a Publix sub and enjoy the day!

We deeply appreciate the picture showing the ramp going into the water. Our adult son is missing his lower leg and has difficulty getting in and out of water with steps. Thanks, again.
