Hidden in the heart of rural Florida, nestled amongst the pines and palmettos, lies a truly unique and unforgettable destination: Solomon’s Castle. This whimsical, hand-built castle is the brainchild of artist Howard Solomon, a testament to his creativity and his unwavering belief in the power of creating beauty from trash.
A Castle Built on Dreams and Discarded Treasures
Solomon’s Castle is not your typical medieval fortress. It is primarily constructed from discarded aluminum printing plates from a local newspaper, which makes it gleam in the Florida sunshine. Its slight rainbow iridescence reminded me of the children’s book “Rainbow Fish.” While walking with the tour guide, I learned that the artist Howard Solomon, who created the castle, was a child at heart with a love for puns. He embedded meaning in each piece he created throughout his life.
The castle is a vast complex featuring towers, turrets, and a moat, all decorated with a diverse array of sculptures, stained glass windows, and other whimsical art pieces. It serves not only as an art gallery showcasing Howard’s life work, but also as a living history museum where visitors can explore the personal living space of Howard and his family.

Planning Your Visit to Solomon’s Castle
Solomon’s Castle is open to the public year-round, Tuesday through Sunday. Parking is free, and admission fees apply. The castle is located in Ona, Florida, approximately 20 miles east of Bradenton.
Tour Pricing (Cash only)
Please note that this is a cash-only establishment. While there is an ATM available, it is often unreliable and frequently out of service, especially after recent flooding. You might be wondering why electronic payment options like Venmo or Cash App are not accepted. The reason is that there is no cell service in this area. As I drove onto the last stretch of road leading to the property, I lost all connection. I overheard several other visitors mention that they were unable to make or receive calls or texts. If you still have a checkbook, you can write a check, but bringing cash may be a more practical option in this day and age.
Two tour options are available: The Castle tour and Howard’s Encore tour, which includes an additional tour of the grounds. Both tours are accompanied by a guide.
At the time of my visit, the adult pricing for the castle tour was $35.00, and the Howard’s encore tour was $15.00. These tours can be combined during the purchase, and you can save $10.00 on the combined tickets. Children under 3 are free; ages 4-12 are $10.00 for the castle tour and $6 for the encore tour, and ages 13-17 are $14.00 for the castle tour and $6.00 for the encore tour.

A Tour Through Solomon’s Imagination
Inside the castle, the tour guide asked us to refrain from taking pictures and videos. At first, I was skeptical about this request. Was this one of those circus attractions where people pay to see the bearded lady or the lizard man, only to find that once the curtain is pulled back, it’s just a woman with a few chin hairs and a guy in a lizard costume? Had I been duped?
Fortunately, my anxiety subsided as we moved from room to room and our tour guide began explaining the story behind each piece. The castle’s interior is just as captivating as its exterior, with every room showcasing Solomon’s artistic vision. Each space tells a story, from the grand entrance hall adorned with a magnificent chandelier made from recycled materials to walls filled with hand-carved portraits and life-sized animals created from steel drums.

Highlights of a Visit
- The Stained Glass Windows: More than 80 of Solomon’s hand-crafted stained glass windows adorn the castle, each a masterpiece of color and light. Depicting everything from nursery rhymes to the solar system planets, these windows are a testament to Solomon’s skill and imagination.
- The Sculptures: Throughout the castle, visitors will encounter a wide array of sculptures, all created from found objects. From whimsical animals to fantastical creatures, Howard Solomon had an incredible ability to transform discarded materials into works of art. Many of his neighbors would drop off these discarded items to be incorporated into his work.
- The Moat Restaurant: Located within the castle grounds, the Moat Restaurant is housed in a 65-foot replica of a 16th-century Portuguese galleon. Enjoy a delicious meal surrounded by the unique ambiance of this unique dining experience. There is seating outside and inside. Solomon’s Moat Restaurant can host up to 250 people, and it offers this area as a unique event space for celebrations.
- The Lighthouse: A four-story lighthouse stands tall within the castle complex, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. At the time, it was not open to the public.
